{"id":3849,"date":"2026-08-22T16:25:55","date_gmt":"2026-08-22T21:25:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bohemianutopia.com\/?p=3849"},"modified":"2026-08-22T16:25:55","modified_gmt":"2026-08-22T21:25:55","slug":"august-2026-newsletter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bohemianutopia.com\/?p=3849","title":{"rendered":"August 2026 Newsletter"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><strong>August 2026 Newsletter<\/strong> \u2013 Rex Smith &amp; Laura Winters<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>In the field<\/li>\n<li>Plant Talk<\/li>\n<li>Intro to Beekeeping Classes<\/li>\n<li>Beekeeping Class Series &#8211; A Deeper Dive<\/li>\n<li>Creamed Honey<\/li>\n<li>Liquid Honey<\/li>\n<li>Upcoming Events<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>In August<\/strong> &#8211; Laura and Rex are making rounds to check bees &#8211; and to make sure they have ample stores available to get then through the drought we are in.\u00a0 \u00a0Most of North Texas has had triple-digit temperatures for about 6 weeks &#8211; so any forage available to the bees is not necessarily easy to find.<\/p>\n<p>NPR reported this morning (Aug 20 2026) that North Texas is currently in our 9th hottest summer ever recorded, and the 7th hottest August in recorded history.\u00a0 \u00a0 Work days try to start EARLY and be done daily by 11am when possible.<\/p>\n<p>You may notice honey bees gathering water from the edges of your swimming pool, water features, or stock ponds.\u00a0 \u00a0The forager bees will bring in water to the hives, fan their wings over the cells where they have put the water, and use it as evaporative cooling to try to keep the hive temperature DOWN to 95 deg. F.<\/p>\n<p>Along with checks for food (nectar and pollen) in the hives &#8211; we are also starting our mite treatments in the hives.\u00a0 \u00a0We apply a product called Apiguard into the hives.\u00a0 Apiguard is a thymol-based (from the Thyme herb) mitacide, and we apply it twice in summer time.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Plant Spotlight<\/strong> &#8211; Laura Winters<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Peculiar Year for Honeybee Plant Resources<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This has certainly been a peculiar year for plant resources for our honeybees! The timing and availability of several important nectar and pollen sources have been quite different from what we typically see.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Trumpet vine<\/strong>, an important nectar source, is still in bloom\u2014when normally it would have been long past its prime by now. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bohemianutopia.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_9561_20260820_115549.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-3839 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bohemianutopia.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_9561_20260820_115549-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Roughstem rosinweed\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bohemianutopia.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_9561_20260820_115549-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.bohemianutopia.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_9561_20260820_115549-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.bohemianutopia.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_9561_20260820_115549-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/www.bohemianutopia.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_9561_20260820_115549-113x150.jpg 113w, https:\/\/www.bohemianutopia.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_9561_20260820_115549-400x533.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.bohemianutopia.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_9561_20260820_115549.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><strong>Roughstem rosinweed<\/strong> has only just begun opening a few blossoms here and there, even though it was already in full bloom by late June last year.<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, <strong>sunflowers<\/strong> have come to the rescue! They got an early start this year and continue to push through, providing tremendous amounts of both pollen and nectar. Sunflowers are especially important because they help keep our colonies well supplied with the resources needed to encourage our queens to continue laying plenty of eggs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Partridge pea<\/strong>, although considered a lower-quality nectar source, is also showing up with surprising regularity across the counties where we care for bees. Interestingly, we didn&#8217;t see this plant at all last year, so its return is a welcome sight.<\/p>\n<p>To our surprise, we&#8217;ve also noticed a great deal of <strong>milkweed<\/strong> beginning to bloom. Native milkweed flowering this late in the year is unusual, but we&#8217;ll gladly take the win! Hooray for the honeybees, bumblebees, monarch butterflies, and all the other pollinators benefiting from these blooms!<\/p>\n<p>And last, but certainly not least, <strong>snow-on-the-prairie<\/strong> is coming in strong! This beautiful plant can literally make a pasture look as though it has been covered in snow, and it provides a tremendous nectar source for our honeybees. This particular nectar will be strictly for the bees, however, as the honey produced from it can have a fiery flavor that isn&#8217;t suitable for human consumption.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the unusual timing and unpredictable plant resources this year, we&#8217;re celebrating every bloom we can find.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bohemianutopia.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Screenshot_20260820-174142__01__01.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3840\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bohemianutopia.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Screenshot_20260820-174142__01__01-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Photo: Rex Smith -
