{"id":1491,"date":"2016-06-24T09:51:52","date_gmt":"2016-06-24T14:51:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bohemianutopia.com\/?p=1491"},"modified":"2016-09-20T16:39:07","modified_gmt":"2016-09-20T21:39:07","slug":"what-if-i-just-leave-the-bees-in-my-house","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bohemianutopia.com\/?p=1491","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;What if I just leave the bees in my house?&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(note:\u00a0 Click photos for larger view)<\/p>\n<p>I often am asked :\u00a0 What will happen if I just leave the bees&#8221;, or &#8220;What if we wait?&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The following pics are a graphic example of one possible scenario that can (and does) occur.<\/p>\n<p>Scene:\u00a0 In October of 2015, the homeowner observed bees swarming, and moving into a 2nd floor peak soffit area of his home.\u00a0 I was called, and a removal date was set for mid October.\u00a0 I arrived, and upon opening of the soffit &#8211; the bees were not found &#8211; they were actually in the roof line &#8211; above a finished-out 2nd story room.<\/p>\n<p>The homeowner was made aware of the situation, and the options available.\u00a0 I could (a) open up the drywall inside the house &#8211; which would have been the easiest method at the time because of the pitch of the roof.\u00a0 or (b) &#8211; I could remove a section of roof shingles and decking above the colony.<\/p>\n<p>The customer opted to wait.\u00a0 I hadn&#8217;t heard back from him until a month ago (June 2016) &#8211; when he called to let me know that the house was to be re-roofed, and he was ready for the bees to come out &#8211; but if it could be coordinated with the roofer, so that the decking could be opened up and re-roofed at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>We are NOW at the summer solstice.\u00a0 The sun is farther north in the sky than it was in October.\u00a0 The bees did not realize that their home would no longer be protected by the trees above in the heat of summer.\u00a0 The comb melted, and dropped onto the drywall ceiling of the room below.\u00a0 From the appearance of the comb and it&#8217;s condition &#8211; I&#8217;d say the comb dropped about a week ago.\u00a0 It was a NASTY MESS.\u00a0 (click any of the photos for a larger view)<\/p>\n<p>First view:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bohemianutopia.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Dscn3573_sm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-thumbnail wp-image-1490\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bohemianutopia.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Dscn3573_sm-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Dscn3573_sm\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A layer or two removed:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bohemianutopia.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Dscn3578_sm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-thumbnail wp-image-1487\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bohemianutopia.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Dscn3578_sm-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Dscn3578_sm\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And the REAL nastiness is exposed:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bohemianutopia.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Dscn3579_sm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-thumbnail wp-image-1486\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bohemianutopia.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Dscn3579_sm-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Dscn3579_sm\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Yes &#8211; the black in the bottom is the drywall &#8211; where honey and wax fell &#8211; and drained\/dripped and seeped from the roof joist space &#8211; and impregnated the drywall.\u00a0 Note also &#8211; the Small Hive Beetle larvae, and also Wax Moth larvae.\u00a0 Yes &#8211; those are &#8220;maggots&#8221; &#8211; just not from flies.\u00a0 The stench of the mess was horrible.<\/p>\n<p>The mess filled (2) 5-gallon buckets with comb that was pretty nasty.
